First came the layers of heavy, indigo-hued woolen robes and steel-toed leather boots, then a reinforced kheitan made of quilted fabric and tanned human hide. Over the kheitan went a hauberk of blackened steel mail, with long sleeves and a broad skirt that hung down to mid-calf. The weight of the steel rings rested heavily on Rathann’s strong shoulders, aggravating the pain of the many bruises and shallow cuts that marked his arms and torso. The druchii scarcely noticed. He’d suffered worse on a daily basis during his years of training.
Regina smelled smoke and heard the muffled thunder of distant cannon fire as she strode through the little village of Grimmenhagen. She walked because she'd left her horse with Dorothea, so she could sell it and bribe the priests of Morr to bury their mother in a proper cemetery, even though she had changed.

"Kleinmann, bring up your shield!" Regina Seibolt shouted. "Bring up your..." She winced as the young novice took a wooden sword across the ear and howled. "Ah well, you'll remember next time, eh? Come on, stop blubbing. Back to guard."

They came for Rathann in the hour of the wolf, when the twin moons were low on the horizon and his small tower room was plunged into deep shadow. He had been asleep for barely an hour, sunk in exhausted slumber, when the sound of splintering wood split the silence in the small antechamber beyond.
