Realm vs Realm
What is Realm vs. Realm™?
Realm vs. Realm, or RvR, is a term that was trademarked by Mythic Entertainment during the development of Dark Age of Camelot. RvR is team-based Player vs. Player (PVP) game-play where each Realm works together toward a common goal. Players choose a side by selecting a race and, in the case of Warhammer Online, they battle it out in areas and work toward goals provided by the game, including Scenarios, Keep sieges, and capital city sieges. It means that a player never has to fight alone because there is always an army of allies that has his or her back. Players can choose to Rank-up in RvR areas, or stay in safer, Player vs. Environment (PvE) areas until they are ready to jump into the real battles of WAR.

Does collision detection work on friends, enemies, or both?
Collision detection turns on when players are in RvR combat, and it impacts friendly players and enemies alike. This allows for strategic formation of things such as tank walls atop Keep staircases.

Is the combat in WAR turn-based?
No.

Are players able to loot other players' corpses in RvR?
Yes! Every player has an independent item table assigned to them that can be looted by enemy players who kill them; however, this item table is NOT drawn from that player's personal inventory. You will never lose your own items or gold from being looted by an enemy player.

What kind of rewards can you get from RVR?
The rewards you can get from RvR include gold, armor, weapons, Renown and Influence (and, by extension, Renown and Influence items), currency (called medallions) with which you can buy armor set pieces, and of course, the eternal satisfaction of slaying a hated foe.

What is Renown?
Renown is the system which measures Realm vs. Realm (RvR) participation by a player. It functions as an experience system for RvR and players can "level up" to earn Renown Ranks that show their proficiency at fighting the opposing Realm. Renown gain is also capped based on a character's Rank so a player can't be Renown Rank 40 and player Rank 5.

The Renown system dictates the rewards made available to a player (items, abilities, titles, or otherwise). Renown is gained through many actions in WAR--killing other players, taking or defending Battlefield Objectives or Keeps, participating in Scenarios, and zone control.

How soon can I begin to RvR, and will I be able to get adequate gear solely from RvRing?
You can log in on day one and run straight to the RvR area in the very first zone if you'd like. And you'll be able to acquire plenty of great gear via Renown (which builds during RvR combat). Most players prefer a mix of gear acquired from PvE content and RvR, but if you want to gear-up via RvR alone, you certainly can.

Even if I can only play a few hours a week, will I still be able to participate in, and contribute to, sieges on the enemy's capital city?
You will indeed! Especially in portions of the city siege and capture process that involve RvR instances; you'll find that all players are valuable to the causes of both assault and defense. This is due to the importance of the role of balanced, instanced, and time-limited Scenario RvR in the final stages of the RvR campaign.

What incentives, aside from bragging rights, are there for players to assault and capture a Keep? Are there Renown rewards for defending a Keep successfully and preventing its capture?
Ah, the short answer which begged for more...capturing a Keep or Battlefield Objective will give you Renown Points and Influence. Defending a Keep or Battlefield Objective will also give you Renown Points and Influence. You will earn a base amount of points for taking a Keep or Battlefield Objective, in addition to the points gained from killing players in the area.

I've heard that some Public Quests will impact RvR progress (zone control). Can you give an example of how?
Public Quests contribute to zone control as do standard quests. Every time a PQ or quest is completed, your Realm is granted Victory Points. Those Victory Points are fed into a large pool that is shared with Scenarios, open-world objectives (Keeps and Battlefield Objectives) and skirmish kills. WAR is a Realm vs. Realm game, and PvE is a part of the war, so of course we include these aspects when determining zone control.

Do you gain any form of PvE bonus, in the form of contribution or experience rewards, for controlling a Keep in an area, as opposed to totally controlling an area?
Keeps alone do not grant bonuses. Experience and Renown Point bonuses are granted across the entire zone for controlling Battlefield Objectives.

Do siege weapons look different based on your race?
Siege weapons have a race- and Realm-specific look to them, but they won't have unique abilities based on Realm or race. A Chaos ram will function exactly the same as an Empire ram, and a Rock Lobber will function the same as a Dwarf mortar.

How does City Capture work?
Cities become attackable when one side captures two pairings within six hours. At that point, defenders and attackers alike should move to the city gates for the ultimate RvR experience. Cities are instanced into 48 vs. 48 groups at a max, but each instance is contributing to a single zone-control bar. To gain Victory Points for control of the city, you need to win the city Public Quest, which consists of controlling three objectives in the city--think Nordenwatch on crack.

If one side can get enough points in under two hours, the city will be captured by that side. If it's the defenders who capture, the campaign resets and we get back to the business of RvRing in the open world. If it's the attackers, they'll get a shot at experiencing the end-game content including two "warlord" PQ's that drop warlord gear and attacking the King who drops the highest gear in the game. Kings require the highest armor, wards, and a warband of coordinated players. During the city's captured state, the previous defenders can continue to enter the city to harass and kill the invaders, so if killing NPC's isn't your thing, you can take part in the slaughter in the streets.

After six hours of city capture, the campaign will reset and the losing side will get a chance at getting some revenge. Defenders that enter the city after it has become captured can complete the city PQ to reduce this time.
