Meet the Development Team

Justin Webb, Senior Design Manager
What is it you do on a daily basis?
I’m currently in charge of the team that figures out how itemization and crafting works. Right now, we’re working on item sets—where they drop, who drops them, how awesome the set bonuses are, etc.-but things like stores, “the economy”, crafting, harvesting, the auction house, and quest rewards are also our responsibility. Basically, we will be ensuring that all the “stuff” your toon accumulates along the way is super cool and shiny.

I also spend a disproportionate amount of time being filmed by Paul Barnett.

What is your background? College? Has it helped with the job? 1st job out of school? What other jobs have you held in the industry?
Whoa! Steady there tiger! Slow down with the questions.

I’m originally from a little town in south-west England and have a Physics degree from Imperial College, London. Like in most industries, having a degree is invaluable in getting noticed by a recruiter or hiring manager, even if it’s in something strange—like physics. Stay in school kids!

My first job out of school involved a small dark room, a rumbling machine filled with boiling water, and copious amounts of washing-up liquid. My subsequent jobs all involved some kind of developmental editing or game design.

I’ve just started at EA-Mythic. Before that, I worked for Wizards of the Coast for 5 years.

What other titles have you worked on recently?
While I was at Wizards of the Coast, I worked on quite a few collectable games—I was lead editor/developer for Magic: the Gathering, Axis & AlliesMiniatures, and Dreamblade™ Collectable Miniatures.

What was your “welcome to the game industry” moment when it hit you that you were really making games for a living?
It’s a pretty amazing experience the first time you see something you’ve worked on on a store shelf somewhere. I think for me though, it really hit when I saw a kid in a game store playing with a theme deck that I had designed—and seemed like he was having fun with it too. That felt more tangible than just knowing that my name was on a list of credits somewhere in the deck box—although that feels pretty cool the first time that happens too.

What are your hopes/goals for the game?
My main goal is to help make the game something that I’d want to play myself. I’m a sucker for a well-designed immersive RPG experience. So far, this game is delivering that in spades... warspades!

What are your favorite video/computer games of all time? What games are you playing right now?
In no particular order: Civilization, Colonization, Goldeneye, Final Fantasy Tactics, FFVII, anything Elder Scrolls, Elite, Terris, WoW.

I’ve been playing a lot of Bowling on the Wii recently. But I’m convinced it cheats and contains some kind of girl filter.

What music are you listening to right now?
Right this second . . . Teenage Fanclub.

Is there a recent movie/TV show you’ve seen or book/comic you read that you’d recommend to others?
There are four TV shows that I watch religiously and would recommend without question: Lost (an obsession); Heroes (flawed, yet compelling); Battlestar Galactica (superb), and ... er ... Veronica Mars.
The Departed is my favorite movie of the year so far. I can’t wait to see how 300 turns out either.
I just lied. Sorry. Casino Royale is my favorite movie of the year so far.
